Chemical Strategies for the Synthesis of Protein–Polymer Conjugates

2012

Protein-polymer conjugates have achieved tremendous attention in the last few years. The synergistic combination of properties has led to certain advantages in bio-applications. Over the past few years, numerous chemical strategies have been developed to conjugate different synthetic polymers onto proteins, most of which can be summarized within the scope of click-chemistry. Here we highlight conjugation strategies based on available functional groups present on the synthetic polymer and existing groups of proteins from the natural pool. In particular, the chapter organizes the various possible reactions by classes of functional groups present on protein surfaces, deriving from selected ami…

A methodology to generate a synergetic land-cover map by fusion of different land-cover products

2012

Abstract The main goal of this study is to develop a general framework for building a hybrid land-cover map by the synergistic combination of a number of land-cover classifications with different legends and spatial resolutions. The proposed approach assesses class-specific accuracies of datasets and establishes affinity between thematic legends using a common land-cover language such as the UN Land-Cover Classification System (LCCS). The approach is illustrated over a large region in Europe using four land-cover datasets (CORINE, GLC2000, MODIS and GlobCover), but it can be applied to any set of existing products. The multi-classification map is expected to improve the performance of indiv…

Understanding the affinity of bis-exTTF macrocyclic receptors towards fullerene recognition

2019

A new series of fullerene receptors based on exTTF macrocycles with alkyl ether chains of increasing length is reported. The novel macrocyclic receptors are able to favourably interact with fullerene C60 through a synergistic combination of π–π, CH⋯π and n⋯π noncovalent interactions. We identify that the highest affinity towards C60 recognition is achieved for the host with the tightest fit; that is, the smallest receptor with a cavity large enough to host the buckyball inside (log Ka = 5.2 in chlorobenzene at 298 K). However, besides this expected observation, theoretical calculations evidence that the most stable self-assembling configuration corresponds for all the receptors to an outsid…

Ionic liquids and microwave irradiation as synergistic combination for polar Diels–Alder reactions using properly substituted heterocycles as dienoph…

2012

For the DA reactions between nitropyrrole derivatives and isoprene, the combination of microwave irradiation and protic ionic liquid, has a notable synergistic effect. DFT calculations suggest that a supplementary energy ranking in the IR region of 1700-1400 cm-1 can favour the structural changes in the reactants to reach the TS. Fil: Mancini, Pedro Maximo Emilio. Influence of impregnation solution viscosity and osmolarity on solute uptake during vacuum impregnation of apple cubes (var. Granny Smith)

2008

Vacuum-assisted impregnation of pectinmethylesterase (PME) solution has been recognized as an efficient pretreatment to improve the firmness of heat-treated fruit. In order to improve the control of solute infusion into fruit pieces, the effect of the osmolarity and viscosity of vacuum impregnation solution on solute penetration and distribution was studied in 1.5 cm apple cubes, using model PME-based solutions containing sodium chloride and/or sodium alginate. While vacuum impregnation of either a viscous hypotonic or a non-viscous hypertonic solution infused solutes homogeneously into fruit pieces, the penetration of viscous hypertonic solutions was much lower, and PME or chloride infusio…
